Description
Jaap Kunst, founding father of ethnomusicology, studied music in Flores in the early thirties. His own student, the missionary Father Rozing, did further work after World War II; recently, Paula Bos did follow-up research. Her study provides a biography of musical instruments in the light of social processes in Flores from the thirties onwards. Describes the field research methods used by Kunst, Rozing and Bos, and analyses the various flutes and songs. One chapter is devoted to the foi meze, the one metre long ‘king of flutes’. Illustrated.
